About Canyonside Equestrian Center

Our Mission

At Canyonside Equestrian Center, we believe in the transformative power of equestrian experiences to inspire, educate, and connect people of all backgrounds. Our mission is to create a welcoming sanctuary where the joys of horsemanship are accessible to everyone, especially underserved and underrepresented communities.

A Glimpse Of How It All Started

Canyonside Equestrian Center, originally known as Horseman's Park, was established by Barbara Gerrior in the early 1970's as a riding and training facility.

Barbara was renting the property from the late developer Irving Kahn. After Kahn's passing, AVCO bought the land and gave her an eviction notice. After a long battle, the city of San Diego bought the land and gave Barbara a long-term lease.

The property has changed management a few times over the years, but it is still owned by the City of San Diego and is still leased out to be operated as a riding, training and boarding facility. The property is approximately 15.44 - acres and is part of the Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve.

We are conveniently located just off the 56 Freeway/Black Mountain Road, or the 15 Freeway/Mercy Road.
